A special new itinerary is set for 2017 that allows guests to explore the secrets and treasures of the Bay of Islands and Northland. On your dream-come-true summer cruise around the Bay of Islands you’ll discover uninhabited sanctuary islands, watch dolphins at play, visit fascinating historic places, plus a private coach visit to Cape Reinga, and enjoy the finest cuisine served with endless sea views. The 144 islands that make up the Bay of Islands and Northland region are a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers. You’ll discover perfect beaches, untouched native forests, fabulous day walks and interesting historical sites. In terms of New Zealand’s history, this is the birthplace of our nation.

Highlights

• Discover Deep Water Cove - a magical nature reserve complete with an idyllic waterfall framed by native forest

• Have fabulous lunch in the world-famous Mangonui Fish and Chips shop.

• Travel by private comfortable coach to Cape Reinga, New Zealand’s most northwest tip.

On arrival in the Bay of Islands, please make your way to Opua Wharf where boarding commences at 5pm. We plan to sail at 6pm once all guests are onboard and you are familiar with the safety briefing and comfortably sipping champagne, nibbling canapés and getting to know your fellow passengers. We cruise north as the exquisite scenery slips by. Our crew is always on hand to explain points of interest, or refill your glass. Your first night will be spent at picturesque Opunga Cove, a tranquil haven for cruising yachts and launches. The cove faces west, so you can sit and enjoy the sunset from your comfortable deck steamer chair.
Today you’ll visit beautiful Motuarohia-Roberton Island, which you can explore in many different ways. Snorkel in the sheltered lagoon, kayak around the bay or hike up to the historic Maori Pa site. From the summit you’ll be rewarded by blockbuster views of the entire Bay of Islands area – green jewels in a sea of sparkling blue. Like Opunga Cove, this island has a murderous history. In the late afternoon we’ll motor to Urupukapuka, the largest island in the bay to enjoy our chef’s gourmet barbecue with fresh local seafood and produce.
Today there’s plenty of time to discover Urupukapuka Island. You could hike around the island, which has historic pa sites and several fabulous beaches. Or explore the edges of the island by kayak, stopping for a picnic along the way. Fishing from one of our tenders is also an option – maybe you’ll catch dinner! If this all sounds too much, simply lounge around on board with a great book and regular deliveries of cold drinks and tasty nibbles. After lunch we’ll cruise through the narrows of the Albert Passage and along Cape Brett Peninsula towards Deep Water Cove. Watch for gannets and dolphins along the way. Deep Water Cove is a magical nature reserve complete with an idyllic waterfall framed by native forest. We hope you’ll get the chance to swim with the dolphins here – an amazing experience you’ll remember forever.
After a sumptuous breakfast on deck, we’ll cruise across to Whangaroa Harbour. Along the way you can admire stunning homes tucked into remote bays and beaches. The harbour was formed when rising sea levels drowned a river valley about 6,000 years ago. Steep outcrops remain from ancient volcanic rocks and create a spectacular environment. Watch the sunset while sipping a sundowner, then look forward to a night of indulgence with the Captain’s dinner.
We’ll continue to cruise after breakfast and everyone is settled into their favourite viewing position and by late morning anchor off the historic village of Mangonui. Here is a collection of charming 150-year-old buildings that now house cafés, art and craft shops and the world-famous Mangonui Fish and Chips shop where we have their fabulous lunch.
Departing after breakfast we travel by private comfortable coach to Cape Reinga, New Zealand’s most northwest tip. Cape Reinga is generally considered the separation marker between the Tasman Sea to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east. From the lighthouse it is possible to watch the tidal race, as the two seas clash to create unsettled waters off the coast. A tasty lunch is served along the way. On the way back to the ship we travel down 90 mile beach which is now a state highway (is actually only 55 miles but that's another story). In 1932 the beach was used as the runway for some of the earliest airmail services between Australia and New Zealand. Returning to the ship, that has re-positioned to Waitangi, in the late afternoon, to snacks before we move to our anchorage for the evening.
We travel to the Keri Keri inlet to collect fresh green - lipped mussels for our barbecue lunch. The sauvignon Blanc is chilling and the chef is determined to impress you, yet again. Then onto Russell, known in whaling times as ‘the hell-hole of the Pacific’ because it was a place of loose women and drunken sailors. In Russell we go ashore to explore craft shops, museums, churches and the historic Pompallier French Mission house.
On your final day we have breakfast under way to Opua Wharf. We have you disembarking at 8:30am when an airport transfer goes into Paihia township for those wishing to spend more time in Paihia, and then continues onto Bay of Islands airport to coincide with the 0945 AirNZ flight to Auckland.
Itinerary is subject to change due to operational or weather and sea conditions and is made entirely at the Captain’s discretion.

Island Passage

Vessel Type:  Luxury Catamaran

Length:  42 metres

Passenger Capacity:  22

Built:  2007

If you have traveled with the big ship cruise lines in the past, it's time to start rethinking everything you thought you knew about cruising. Furthermore if you have been avoiding cruising because you imagined it would be like traveling in a shopping mall, it's time to think again. We offer something else altogether.

The ‘Island Passage’ is our beautifully appointed small ship. Her workboat exterior camouflages a stunning interior. Weighing in at almost 500 tonnes, she’s equipped to travel to inaccessible areas while delivering the highest level of passenger comfort. On board you’ll find 10 spacious en-suite cabins, a large dining room and saloon lounge, a library and generous outdoor living spaces. In the galley, our chef works with the freshest local ingredients and delicacies to create memorable meals that reflect the day’s adventures.

For entertainment and exploration, Island Passage carries purpose-built landing craft, three large tenders, sea kayaks, a five-seat helicopter, fish and snorkel equipment. Never a dull moment, although lazing in a deckchair is always an acceptable option. During each journey, our eight-person crew is on hand to share their knowledge of the ocean and local landscapes.

Our expedition boats are designed to provide fast and efficient transport to and from the 'Island Passage' and are well suited for exploring the local bays, islands, and rivers that are right on your doorstep. All boats are manned with guides, two-way radios and safety equipment for your peace of mind.

Our fishing has no rigid daily schedule. Different areas will be covered according to what the Captain and guides believe will be best in that specific day or week. Several levels are available during the cruises to suit the novice to the more experienced angler.

Onboard Luxury
When the ship was designed, the instructions were to provide a luxurious layout, uncrowded and comfortable for a maximum of 24 guests. This has been well achieved. You will encounter the spacious saloon and dining area on the promenade deck, a large aft teak deck with steamers chairs and ease of access to the tenders, oversized cabins and ensuites, wide side teak decks for strolling the ship and an overwhelming feeling of being onboard a small private yacht.

The Suites
The ‘Island Passage’ is perfect for a leisurely break from a hectic lifestyle. We only have accommodation onboard for 24 passengers. The ten spacious individually designed cabins, with rich timber panelling and New Zealand Kauri furniture, fitted with DVD, audio and TV, and are all air-conditioned. Most with doors opening on to the outer deck, each cabin has its own private ensuite. Our suites are amongst the largest for any ship of it's size.

Expedition Cabins
Located on the main deck, our Expedition cabins give you a choice of a queen-size bed or two singles. Suites with single beds have a pullman berth for a third guest. Individual air conditioning, TV, DVD/CD, movies. Sea view from the portholes.

Staterooms
On the same level as the saloon, bar and dining room, the Staterooms have large picture windows and doors opening directly onto the promenade deck. Each cabin has individual air-conditioning, TV, DVD/CD, movies, writing desk and either queen or twin single beds.

Bridge Deck Suites
Offering the best views on the ship, the two Bridge Deck Suites open directly onto the teak bridge deck. Each cabin is individually air-conditioned with SKY TV, DVD/CD, movies on demand, writing desk, easy chair, super king bed and extra-large bathroom.
