From Cairns to Noumea, you will sail aboard the L’Austral for a 16-day expedition cruise to the heart of the Coral Sea.

At the end of the world, Papua New Guinea is one of the world’s most remote countries. You will discover landscapes of wild beauty, including jagged mountains and white-sand beaches.

Located on the island of New Britain, the port town of Rabaul has always been famous for its spectacular setting. From there, you will set off to observe Mount Tavurvur, the region’s most active volcano.

Further on, the ship will make several stops in the Solomon Islands. This archipelago composed of 900 mainly volcanic islands is a tropical Eden. You will sail in the clear waters of Roderick Bay, home to a myriad of multicoloured coral.

Before heading to New Caledonia, the L’Austral will set sail for the Vanuatu archipelago, its long mountain chains, vast tranquil bays and lagoons in a thousand shades of blue. This is an idyllic environment for anyone seeking adventure and a change of scenery.

Highlights

• Experience a timeless voyage to Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and the Vanuatu archipelago.

• Meet the inhabitants of Santa Ana in their authentic traditional costume. These Melanesian people are horticulturists and fishermen who speak “owa”, and who live at one with nature.

• Discover Mount Yasur, one of the most easily reachable volcanoes that is in eruption nearly continuously. The vast site is conditioned by geological activity, while its approach gives you a good idea of its conical shape and lava eruptions.

Washed by the Coral Sea, the harbour town of Cairns is located on Australia’s North-East Coast. The postcard streets of the city centre are bordered with mansions featuring colonnaded balconies. On the seafront, you can walk alongside a stroll in the shade of the palm trees and contemplate the luxuriant hillsides surrounding the city. These hills are the gateway to the Queensland Rainforests, proclaimed a UNESCO world heritage site for their fauna and flora from the Gondwana era.
To the south-east of the Solomon archipelago, the coral island of Santa Ana, called Owaraha is worth the detour to meet the inhabitants in their authentic traditional costume. These Melanesian people are horticulturists and fishermen who speak “owa”, and who live at one with nature. They’ll give you a warm welcome, by standing in a circle around you and singing their songs and dancing their traditional dances. The warm, limpid waters that border the island are also home to another fascinating population: when you dive into the middle of this aquatic jungle, with its astonishing biodiversity, your experience will be equally as awesome as on terra firma.
Located in the south of the Vanuatu archipelago, the island of Tanna is the most populated in the Tafea province. Mount Tukosmera culminates at 1,084 metres altitude. Along the south-east coastline, 700 metres lower, stands Mount Yasur, the star of the island. This is indeed one of the most easily reachable volcanoes that is in eruption nearly continuously. The vast site is conditioned by geological activity, while its approach gives you a good idea of its conical shape and lava eruptions. The many beaches on the island with their turquoise water and fine sand offer a paradisaical tranquility by contrast.
Perched on a peninsula between bays and hills, on the south-west coast of Grande Terre, Noumea enjoys a magnificent natural setting. The town shelters some exceptional biodiversity, thanks especially to the coastal mangroves. To feel the town’s heartbeat, you can mosey in the place des Cocotiers, where Noumeans love to gather. The Tjibaou cultural centre unveils the secrets of the kanak culture. As for the Hagen castle or the maison Célières, these are precious witnesses of a colonial past. But Noumea is also about sumptuous beaches.
