Aboard L'Austral, set sail for a cruise to the heart of the “Land of the Rising Sun”, a blend of modernity and tradition.

From Osaka to Maizuru via romantic Kyoto, during your cruise Japan will open its doors to you and lift the veil on its imperial past, where the history of the Samurais rubs shoulders with the delicateness of Geishas.

Highlights

• We will call at Hiroshima, the gateway to Miyajima, home to the majestic Shinto Shrine, whose entrance is guarded by a magnificent vermillion Torii. In a picture postcard setting, the gentle serenity of this marvellous sanctuary rewards the traveller’s gaze.

• When L’Austral reaches the port of Nagasaki, you will be reminded of the story of Madame Butterfly, the strains of which can still be heard in the narrow city streets. This is a particularly moving visit as no-one can forget the tragic event whose scars Nagasaki secretly hides.

• You will be comfortable ensconced on the outer decks of L'Austral when you get your first glimpse of the skyline of Okayama, an ancient 16th seigniorial city. Do not miss the famous Korakuen Gardens, one of the three essential landscape gardens of Japan.

• From Sakaiminato, discover medieval Japan and its former Samurai homes. The Samurai were great feudal lords and brave warriors, and they built sumptuous dwellings including Bukeyashiki, which is around 300 years old, a marvellous testament to the golden age of the Edo dynasty.

Like its big sister Tokyo, Osaka is the product of ancestral traditions and flawless technological innovations. And here, in addition, there is the notion of serenity because of its geographical location on the Pacific coast. You’ll actually feel soothed and peaceful when you first set eyes on Osaka castle, standing proud in the midst of majestic skyscrapers. And this feeling will not leave you, whether you’re in the midst of the lively streets of Dotomburi or the bizarre Shinsekai district where time seems to stand still. A multitude of restaurants unfurl before the eyes of the passer-by, with menus full of regional specialities: takoyaki made with octopus and other succulent dishes kushikatsu dishes presented on kebabs.
Located on the island of Honshu, linked to the banks of the inside sea of Seto, Tamano is particularly appreciated for its generously sunny climate. When you arrive, you’ll be surprised by the way the town has expanded along the coastline to the foot of a densely rich forest. Another must-see attraction in the region, architectural this time, is the Seto Ohashi Bridge. At 12.5 kilometres it is the longest two-level bridge in the world.
Whether you’ve been here or not, it is difficult to mention Hiroshima without feeling moved. The town spreads along Honshu Island, along the inside maritime coasts of Seto. Firmly focused on the future, Hiroshima doesn’t forget its past, and a visit to the Peace Memorial Park and its Genbaku Dome are a must. You’ll be amazed by the city's modern, cosmopolitan atmosphere and the effervescent nights just as much as its peaceful stillnessin its natural parkland areas, like splendid Shukkei-en, the town’s historic garden.
Located on the west coast of Shikoku island, Uwajima will delight lovers of history and traditional customs. Here, you can admire the magnificent Uwajima castle, built in the 17th century by the powerful Date clan. You’ll see just how sweet the garden and bridge are. Taga temple contains a sanctuary and a museum dedicated to fertility. You can also discover the togyu, a Nippon variant of bull-fighting where two bulls are pitted against each other without a toreador. As for eating, you must taste a jakoten, a local treat based on fried fish.
In the south of Kyushu island is where you’ll find one of Japan’s most singular places: Kagoshima Kagoshima This town not only has a majestic bay where the sun shimmers on the ocean’s surface, but it also has an active volcano. A visit to this busy metropolis will remind you just how much the Sakurajima volcano is part of the inhabitants’ every day life: in the wake of the almost daily eruptions, a delicate layer of ash settles on monuments here and there. The top of a buried torii measuring 3 metres and “swallowed up” by a giant lava flow in 1914 can still be seen. The ascendancy of nature will send a shiver down your spine.
Located on coast of the island of Kyushu, the famous city of Nagasaki will bowl you over by the richness of its heritage. Despite the destruction in 1945, you can visit several ancient sites, including the beautiful Catholic church of Oura and its garden, the sanctuary of Suwa, as well as several Buddhist temples. The visit to the Atomic Bomb museum gives you insight into the extent of damage of the nuclear attack. Close by, a walk in the Memorial Peace park leads you to a surprising collection of objets d’art offered as a gift from Japan to the planet.
With around four million inhabitants, Busan is the second largest metropolis on South Korea, after Seoul. This dynamic harbour city, located in the south-east, surrounded by the warm waters of the Sea of Japan, benefits from a mild, pleasant climate. You’ll find delightful simply to stroll around the lively streets and explore the city’s outstanding cultural heritage of art galleries, museums, and Buddhist sites, such as the Haedong Yonggungsa temple, which elegantly sits on the waterfront. Rich too in magnificent beaches and superlative natural landscapes, Busan’s peaceful atmosphere will win you over, as will its inhabitants, whom you’ll have the pleasure of meeting.
Located on the south-west coast of Honshu island, the town of Sakaiminato celebrates the comic writer and artist Shigeru Mizuki, born here, in his museum and in the open air with a dedicated tourist route. This itinerary leading through streets and squares presents 134 bronze statues representing the characters of the Japanese writer. This isn’t the only thing Sakaiminato has to offer; this town is truly dynamic due to its large fishing port. You can try some local specialities and enjoy the frequent festivities, not to mention the exceptional views of mount Daisen or the Yumigahama peninsula.
Located on the western coast of Honshu island, in the province of Kyoto, the charming town of Maizuru boasts one of Japan’s most exquisite closed bays. A climb to the observatory will allow you to appreciate the splendour of this inlet scattered with tiny wild islands. You can also admire the treasures of traditional architecture by visiting the temple of Enryu-ji or the Tanabe-jo castle. The town also bears traces of a rich military past, which you can see in the old arsenals of the navy, red brick buildings that today house a museum.
