Iceland
NORTHERN LIGHTS AND WHALES

BOOK YOUR TRIP
7 DAYS/6 NIGHTS ICELAND COMBINATION TRIP

Iceland in September – a special month for a special voyage! Get to know the island of fire and ice – aboard and ashore! As the lazy days of summer slowly come to an end, the island landscape transforms and is reborn into the vibrant colours of autumn. Days become shorter, and the Midnight Sun bids farewell to make room in the sky for a spectacular display of dancing Northern Lights. Many are familiar with the term, "Aurora Borealis,“ but few have experienced this natural phenomenon with their own eyes.

By day we encounter a wide variety of whale species, especially in North Iceland near the Arctic Circle. By night we hunt for the magical Northern Lights, all from the vantage point of the open sea. This unique itinerary begins with a 3-day-cruise along the West Coast with distinctive shore excursions and lectures by local experts, followed by a motor-coach trek along the South Coast of Iceland and back to our final destination of Reykjavík.

Use your leisure time in Reykjavík to uncover the unique charm of the world’s northernmost capital or to experience Iceland. Your “floating hotel” awaits! The OCEAN DIAMOND docks in Old Reykjavík Harbor in the heart of the city a five minute stroll to the main squares, shopping and dining. Embarkation starts at 6 p.m. before the ship sets course for Snaefellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland at 8 p.m. In the evening, keep your eyes open for your first opportunity to see Northern Lights!
At 10 a.m. the OCEAN DIAMOND docks in the small village of Stykkisholmur, a starting point for our explorations of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Snaefellsnes is a wonderful example of “Iceland en miniature,” because the region features nearly every type of natural scenery available in Iceland. In the evening, OCEAN DIAMOND departs friendly Stykkisholmur for the direction of the remote Westfjords. Dark clear sky skies away from city lights offer the best opportunity to view the Northern Lights.
Today‘s destination is the idyllic town of Isafjördur, honorary capital of the Westfjords region. This secluded peninsula is connected to the mainland by only a narrow strip of land and includes areas where cars have never been. The secluded landscape provides jaw-dropping views of dramatic fjords carved by ancient glaciers, sheer table mountains plunging into the ocean and untouched vegetation. Enjoy the beauty of true silence and the tranquillity of nature while sea fishing or visiting Vigur island, a home for thousands of birds. The only wind mill in Iceland is located in Vigur (optional excursion). For the early evening our Expedition Team has prepared an interesting lecture on the Northern Lights phenomenon.
We arrive in Iceland's capital Reykjavik where we switch the OCEAN DIAMOND with our coach that takes us on a 'South Shore Adventure'. Today's destination is Cape Dyrholaey, where we will stay for the two following nights. We stop at Seljalandsfoss, where you can walk behind the water fall and enjoy this unique perspective. In addition, we also include the majestic Skogafoss waterfall with a height of 60 meters. Dinner and overnight.
We take a walk at the fascinating black beach of Vik towards bird cliffs and encounter the rock needles located in the sea. Today's final destination is the famous Glacier Lagoon Jökulsarlon at the bottom of Europe's biggest glacier - Vatnajökull. The glacier is part of Skaftafell National Parc. Apart from being a popular hiking area it is also counted as the biggest National Parc in Europe. Enjoy the tour among majestic ice bergs with an amphibian vehicle on the glacier lagoon, that is included in the price. We head back to our hotel and enjoy the dinner.
Our next stop is the geothermal area with the famous Geyser. Strokkur sends its water fountain every 5 to 10 minutes up the air. The 'Golden Waterfall' Gullfoss is located just a few minutes away. The waterfall transports tremendous amounts of water before it fall s down in several cascades. The next stop is Thingvelir, a place of historic and geological interest. Not just the first parliament of the world has been formed here. At Thingvellir you can observe the effect of the European and North American tectonic plates moving apart. The tour ends in Reykjavik late afternoon. Enjoy the last evening with the city's great variety of restaurants and cultural hot spots.
Transfer to the airport or extend your stay with one of our interesting post-programs.
