To the south-east of the Solomon archipelago, the coral island of Santa Ana, called Owaraha is worth the detour to meet the inhabitants in their authentic traditional costume. These Melanesian people are horticulturists and fishermen who speak “owa”, and who live at one with nature. They’ll give you a warm welcome, by standing in a circle around you and singing their songs and dancing their traditional dances. The warm, limpid waters that border the island are also home to another fascinating population: when you dive into the middle of this aquatic jungle, with its astonishing biodiversity, your experience will be equally as awesome as on terra firma.
Located in the far east of Indonesia, the provincial capital of Papua New Guinea huddles at the foot of steep, forested slopes of the hills overlooking the bay. From Jayapura, you can easily go and explore the Papuan hinterlands. Before setting off, a visit to the Loka Budaya museum gives you some insight into the indigenous culture. To get an all-round view of the city, go to the General MacArthur memorial on top of one of the hills overlooking the port. If you are after a magnificent beach to relax on, you won’t be disappointed by Pantai Base G, about 10 kilometres from the centre.
If you are travelling the world in search for the most beautiful diving spots, you’ll find what you’re looking for in the Indonesian Raja Ampat islands. Off Sorong, ideally located in the heart of the illustrious “Coral Triangle”, the 1,500 or so islets that make up the archipelago are the ideal place for admiring some outstandingly diverse coral reefs. At the junction of the Pacific and Indian oceans, the Raja Ampat islands, covered with lush jungle, are also extraordinary lands for hiking. Between multi-coloured lagoons, immaculate beaches and green landscapes, the Raja Ampat islands offer you a breath-taking palette of colours...
North-west of Insular Malaysia, in the State of Sabah, Sandakan is a privileged destination for ecotourism. Next to the Sepilok Forest reserve (rehabilitation centre for orang-utans) this coastal city nestles in the heart of a green paradise sheltering rare and protected fauna. Although the city gets its reputation from its proximity to the Sepilok sanctuary, the 10,000-hectare reserve dedicated to large apes.
Posted on the north-east coast of the Malaysian State of Sabah, on the island of Borneo, Kota Kinabalu is an excellent stopover for exploring the whole region. If you like adventure, its proximity with Kinabalu makes it a destination of choice. But before you start to climb the holy mountain, you can stop in the heart of the metropolis, that the initiates nicknamed KK, because it has some interesting surprises in store for you. Although, there isn’t much left of its colonial heritage, the city’s multiple ethnicity will seduce you, especially in its food, and in the warm, picturesque abundance that reigns there. Don’t miss a stroll along the city’s busiest promenade, the colourful Waterfront.
