Famous islands and legendary coasts – enjoy the sunny sides of life in Greece and Italy.

Butrint: a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Visible from the island of Corfu, the ruined city of Butrint lies protected on a peninsula. Butrint is a kaleidoscope of Mediterranean history; as one of the trade centres of the ancient world, the city attracted numerous conquerors and travellers throughout the millennia. Excavations have unearthed theatres, temples and baths from the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman periods. Consequently, UNESCO declared Butrint a World Heritage Site in 1992.

Elizabeth‘s favourite island – Corfu
Corfu found fame as a popular traveller’s destination as early as the 19th century. Bored of life at court, Empress Elisabeth of Austria travelled to the island and chose it to realise her dreams. She ordered a palace to be built in the style of Greek mythology and dedicated it to her favourite hero, Achilles. It is called the Achilleion.

Italian dolce vita: Capri and Amalfi
With painted little houses perched along cliff edges and picturesque harbours packed with colourful fishing boats, Capri and Amalfi offer picture-perfect scenes. Experience the dolce vita by mingling with the locals on a lively piazza, or enjoy a relaxed stroll through the towns' romantic side streets with their many small shops.

A lecturer accompanies the trip
Exciting topics, background information and fascinating facts – our expert offers talks on a whole range of subjects from his specialist field.
Guests arrive individually in Piraeus. Embarkation on the SEA CLOUD. "A ship will come...", declared the singer Melina Mercouri to the port of Piraeus. Later, as Greek Minister for Culture, she made Athens the first European Capital of Culture in 1985. The city is considered the birthplace of Europe, of philosophy and of democracy, and is the embodiment of the Olympic ideal. World-famous and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, its landmark is the magnificent Parthenon temple, lying high up on the Acropolis in all its glory. At the foot of the Acropolis hill is the Plaka, the oldest quarter of Athens, and the world's most modern archaeological museum, the new Acropolis Museum, has been here since 2009.
Optional Panoramic trip.
Close to the small seaport of Sarande, amidst a national park, lies Butrint, one of Albania's greatest attractions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This city became a spa and festival town in the ancient world as early as 2,500 years ago, and every era in Greek, Roman and Byzantine history has left behind evidence in stone. Discover the spectacular Lion Gate from the 4th century BC. Four fifths of this archaeological site still remain to be uncovered. Optional Excursion to Butrint.
Greeks, Romans, Venetians and Ottomans were former rulers of the island, which rivalled the trading powers of Venice and Dubrovnik in its medieval heyday. The rich cultural heritage of the picturesque old town of Kerkyra is protected by UNESCO. Island life unfolds against a seemingly aristocratic backdrop. At the end of the 19th century, when Corfu was a Mediterranean destination where the aristocracy and moneyed classes longed to go, the Empress "Sisi" of Austria also discovered the island. She had an old Venetian villa renovated for herself and this became her Achilleion - named after her favourite hero, the legendary Greek Achilles. Optional excursion - Achilleion and Corfu's old town.
Taormina is perched on a rock with a majestic view over the sea. In the 19th century, this small town had already developed into a dream destination for well-heeled travellers and artists. The town's fascination lies in its elegance, the many ancient buildings, the stunningly beautiful coastline, the mild climate, and the view over the silhouette of Etna. Europe's largest volcano is over 3,000 metres (9,843 foot) high, has four summit craters and around 400 subsidiary craters, and is covered with snow almost all year round. In ancient times it was considered the seat of the gods, but nowadays large sections of it are a nature reserve. Optional Excursion to Mount Etna: journey to 2,900 m in cable car and 4x4 vehicle.
Lipari is a tranquil little spot and the largest of the Aeolian Islands, with a cultural heritage stretching back over 6,000 years. Right from first glance you can see its volcanic heritage, with some of the rock formations resembling sculptures, and the entire group of islands is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Aeolian Museum is set on the castle hill and holds an impressive collection of prehistoric and ancient artefacts from this volcanic group of islands. You will find the southern Italian way of life in this little port infectious. Optional City tour or Liparian cooking class.
The beautifully curving Amalfi Coast, which meanders along the starkly protruding Sorrento peninsula, has been listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. In the pretty little town of Amalfi, whose history as an influential maritime republic is still clear to see, a dense labyrinth of pastel-coloured houses clings to the rocky coastline. Boasting three naves, the beautiful 10th century cathedral with an enchanting cloister, colourful marble façade, Arabic-Norman campanile and magnificent steps leading to the lively Piazza Duomo is the heart of this small coastal town.
Even at the time of the Roman Empire, Capri was a particularly precious natural gem and became the summer residence of the Emperor Tiberius. Artists and hedonists, aristocrats and the moneyed classes discovered the island for themselves in the 19th century. This stunningly beautiful rocky island in the Gulf of Naples is famous for its numerous grottos, the most well known being the Blue Grotto. You can expect a combination of pleasure and spectacle when you experience the colourful lifestyle and goings-on in the Piazetta right in the centre of Capri.
All roads lead to Rome. The stunningly beautiful city on the Tiber is around 70 kilometres (44 miles) from the port of Civitavecchia. The highlights of the "Eternal City" are not limited to the seven hills of antiquity. The historic centre and the Vatican State in Rome are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In the city of Vespas and "la dolce vita", painters, sculptors and architects have left behind innumerable works of art over three millennia. Ancient sites, Renaissance palaces, Baroque squares and fountains create a splendid backdrop for enjoying life in between the daily routine and eternity. Disembarkation. Guests return home individually.
